Yet as laborers and migrants became excluded from what counted as the city, Bombay was beset by agricultural crises that caused recurring waves of famine and plague, justifying interventions that further stigmatized the poor. Grounded in an exploration of the changing political economy through the nineteenth and early twentieth century in land, labor, and housing, this book explores the agrarian origins of Bombay city, the mobility of migrants as they brought Bombay into their orbits, the emergence of housing as a commodity that both reflected and produced social life, and the way housing types were encoded as legitimate or illegitimate to make them legible for administration. It foregrounds the perspective of the laboring and urban poor and challenges assumptions about colonial cities and cities of the global south"--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Slums</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="9">4384</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Urbanization</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="9">4385</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Agriculture</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai.</subfield><subfield code="9">4386</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Migrant labor</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="9">4387</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Working class</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="9">4388</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Capitalism</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="z">Mumbai</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="9">4389</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mumbai (India)</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic conditions.</subfield><subfield code="9">4390</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mumbai (India)</subfield><subfield code="x">Colonization.</subfield><subfield code="9">4391</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Online version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Chhabria, Sheetal.</subfield><subfield code="t">Making the modern slum.</subfield><subfield code="d">Seattle : University of Washington Press, [2019]</subfield><subfield code="z">9780295746296</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2019981424</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="906" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">0</subfield><subfield code="b">vip</subfield><subfield code="c">orignew</subfield><subfield code="d">1</subfield><subfield code="e">ecip</subfield><subfield code="f">20</subfield><subfield code="g">y-gencatlg</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="2">udc</subfield><subfield code="c">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="0">0</subfield><subfield code="1">0</subfield><subfield code="2">udc</subfield><subfield code="4">0</subfield><subfield code="6">911375154053CHH</subfield><subfield code="7">0</subfield><subfield code="9">35472</subfield><subfield code="a">CSSSC</subfield><subfield code="b">CSSSC</subfield><subfield code="d">2021-12-14</subfield><subfield code="l">0</subfield><subfield code="o">911.375.1(540.53)CHH</subfield><subfield code="p">G-6980</subfield><subfield code="r">2021-12-14 00:00:00</subfield><subfield code="w">2021-12-14</subfield><subfield code="y">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="955" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="b">2019-08-27</subfield><subfield code="a">xn11 2021-12-09 1 copy rec'd., to CIP ver.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="999" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="c">32105</subfield><subfield code="d">32105</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
